Default Injuries

Really enjoyed Willie's article on avoiding keyboard related injuries. I had a bad non-keyboard related injury mid-March. Walking the dogs with my daughter when I turned my ankle stepping up on the curb and broke both bones in my left forearm, a very nasty fracture with a lot of deformity. I had to have surgery, get a plate and a pin...

Has anyone else had an arm injury and how did you recover? Did it affect your playing long term? It's kept me from practicing.....

Hi Spannfan,

About 5 years ago, I tried going for a octave and a whole step in my left hand. Something tweeked in in my wrist. It's not bad now, but ,I still know it's there. I have problems working octaves in my left hand. DO NOT GO FOR A BIG STRETCH IN YOUR HAND. This was before I found Willies website. Willie says do not go for a 10th if you can't. I wish I had found Willie before I had met The man who was his competition.

Charlie

Ouch!! OK, my turn... I was working out in the gym about 4 weeks ago with a trainer and I tweaked something in my left arm fierce. Seemed like a rotator-cuff or something. Anyway it is healing...but slowly. I'll be 40 this November and I'm starting to feel it. Takes a lot longer to recover!!!

Spann and Charlie I feel your pain, well figuratively...you know what I mean!

We all just gotta do our best to stretch and be careful. Accidents and injuries happen, but knowing your limits and reading your body signals goes a long way.

Cheers guys and hope we all recover soon!

Default Shoulders!

Willie,

Loved the article on injury too. Will have to add my two cents!

Recently have had this shoulder pain. Thought it might have been the way I was sleeping... really wasn't sure what was happening... After about a week, I had a curious thought?!...

Could it be from playing "piano!?"

I Google'd;

'piano - shoulder...'

-before I could finish typing, there it was.

{Now I take care, watch what I doing. How long am I in one position, stressing? -timing,.. angles.. taking breaks, moving arms, move shoulders.
Are they in same position?! Taking breaks, and stretching a lot. Breathing, take it easy,- RELAX. Argh.}

Had one other injury worth mentioning. Other instrument...

Pinched lat muscle! (Like a tooth ache in shoulder.) And very scary.

Loss of 50% power in that arm. Dr wanted to inject Cortisone.

Took about 6-7 Chiro's. (No Cortisone) Found the right one! Believe it or not, cheapest one to! Told me what was going on right away. Got me fixed in about 2 weeks. (signed up for 6! 4 weeks of rehab.)

Lot's of pain. And, could not play!!

Still see the same Chiropractor. Sports Chiropractor.

O.k. My shoulders 'were' - very sore.

Movement is coming back. Still some restriction, and achy, but much better.

Can almost, 'hang' with my hands, from chin up bar. Trying this every day to stretch things.

Shoulders were so sore, it hurt to raise them up to the bar!

Been going to the gym everyday. Stretching, and cardio are a big stress relief all the way around!

Great article Willie.

Spannfan. Airport's will never be the same.

After a year of playing I developed tendonitus. I guess I was pushing my body too hard. Took about six months to go - tendonitus heals VERY slowly. I am now learning to relax at the keyboard.

Loving the site learning lots

some ideas: think allways about Your posture. The posture has something to do with the spine but with Your conscious or subconscious emotions too. So You cannot separate the "mind posture" from the body posture. So when stretching or making some gymnastics donīt work against Your emotional actual concepts. Change the emotions first by funny things, jokes and thoughts that make You lough and so on. The origins for pain in the wrists, shoulders and so on can be in the spine too. Try out if the pain or whatever dissappears or changes when You rotate Your head to the left or the right side. In case of yes there might be an irritation of a nerve which comes from the spine. One nerve is affected very often: N. medianus. He has to do with the 2.,3. and 4th finger and the lower cervical spine.

Default N. medianus

Thanks Christianw

Checking back here now and then. You've got me started looking into this.

(Moved the angle of keyboard only to find it moved the ache in shoulders.)

If you have any links, or any more specific info on this, would much appreciated. Just started looking into it.

Thanks again!
the geetarman.
