I am pleased that you are providing a jazz gospel tutorial section now. I have played in church for many years and have become 'stuck' in a rut. This will open the palette. Would you be open to critiquing 'my/our' playing style and suggesting where to start practicing by providing either samples or chord patterns to you? There is a wealth of material on this site (the jazz one as well) and this can almost be overwhelming.

Would you be interested in posting video/audio in the forum? I think it would be great for students to get each others opinion as well.

Sorry I have been away from this post for a while (in fact I forgot about this question) I would be interested in the critique.
I noticed that you have a list of suggestions which I did made a request to. One of the songs I have 'taken apart' and laid out one of the ways I would play it. I don't have audio or video prep software at the moment so it is written out as what follows below.
If you or anyone else would like to take a look at it that would be great.

I have developed a playing style that would reflect a lot of having to 'lead' from the piano in congregational singing. Therefore I usually do 'a chord per beat' and have worked on making each of those chords slightly different from each other in sort of a walking structure (you know... to keep things marching...flowing) My ear is so used to "the if in doubt use diminished or some kind of chromatic" that I am struggling to hear any new way of playing.

I am pasting below the chord structure I would 'basically' use for an old evangelistic hymn "There Is Power In The Blood"
I kind of took this apart and included the basic block chording eliminating the arpeggios and other flowery items.

I also incorporated in a couple of spots my interpretation of a 3-6-5-2-1 progression (I have managed to sort of hear that one!)

If anyone has any suggestions on how to take this further I would really appreciate it.

Thanks for any input I can get from anyone.

By the way the poly chord using the #I / V aug to I is something I have used for years. What would be the name of this chord? And how would that fit into other patterns?

Thanks

Have you recorded any video of you playing?

Willie: I don't have any video recording equipment... however I will try to maybe put something together audio-wise. I probably should have gone down that road first.
Thanks.
Will get that one up as soon as possible.

I just bought the coolest camera that doubles as a movie camera and it was less than $150! It is a 12 megapixel Olympus FE1010 and it downloads your movies with sound DIRECTLY to YouTube. I don't get a cent from "advertising" Olympus but by going to www.adorama.com or www.newegg.com you can find this camera along with its big brother which is only about $30 more, the FE5010. It would be so nice if more of us could video our efforts and share them with others!! Michael in Corpus Christi, TX zestymike48@gmail.com

I have placed a video showing my style of playing on utube:

The keyboard is not touch sensitive so I was somewhat limited in the feel of things. I am my own worst critique. I probably play too many notes. This will give an idea of where to start with some of us that might be verging on really difficult to overcome old habits.

How can I practice to come up with a style that's more appealing. I tend to use a lot of diminished chords (on the fly) instead of what we have been learning. Probably because that's the first thing I "hear".

I welcome any suggestions.
