In the 1st lesson on left hand shells, you say use root and 3 or root and 7.

is there a reason to not use root and 5 or root and octave?
thankyou

The root, 3 and 7 notes define the chord. 7th, maj7, m7, etc. Playing the 5 or octave really adds nothing to the sound of the chord.

The only time you WOULD play a root five or octave is if you are doing some type of stride left hand. Root, 5 on beats one and three and rootless chord voicing on beats two and four.

Hope this helps.

hi Phailes,
thankyou very much for explaining this.
I had looked at David Sudnows system which uses 5th and octaves, that was why i was unsure,I do like the way Willie teaches and the possibilities of the nice sounding songs.
Still all quite new to me but getting there slowly but most importantly enjoying the journey.thanks again

I bought this system and returned it for a refund immediately. The voicings are really bad.
