I was wondering if you can do inversions on quartel voicings as you do with tertiary? This would lose the "open" effect of the four note spacing, but still would lend some new note combinations.

Yes, you can invert a quartal and get some very nice alterations.
For instance some Major Quartals are:
C6: E-A-D would invert to A-D-E or D-E-A.
These are now becoming more like "clusters" which I love to use in my playing.
In addition you can use this technique for improvisation. So, break up these notes something like:
A-----D-E-D-----low A---DD-E-D-E-A-------
