Do any of you play or plan music for Catholic liturgies? I'm curious about the language changes coming with the implementation of the new missal. What new mass settings have you found or what do you plan on using? Has anyone written a new setting? Any thoughts, ideas, etc would be appreciated...

Since most of the current mass setting will need to be changed, this has been a big deal for publishers and composers. I've written a new jazz setting myself (well, it's mostly finished). I hope that it is interesting yet accessible to the average person in the pew. It is most definitely influenced by my year and a half of study with Willie. If you're interested, let me know and I'll post it in the community area. As of yet it is not published and I don't think that I'm going to go that route with it.

I wasn't sure where to post this so I apologize if this may be somewhat of topic for you.

THANKS!

Actually, the changes are very minimal in the new roman missal...the order of the mass is unchanged and I'm not clear why there would be any new mass settings. They are just wording changes to comply more with the original texts. Interestingly enough, most of the new wording in the English missal will be comparable to what the Spanish missal already was saying, as the translation from the Latin to Spanish was closer to the original.

The changes are not to the mass as a whole, but to the English translation. For example, the response "And also with you" will be changed to "And with your spirit" which the Spanish and French masses already said.

Mass settings are usually just for certain parts of the mass, the Gloria, the Kyrie, the Lord's Prayer, the Sanctus, etc....even the highest masses don't involve chanting the whole mass (except the high Latin mass).

I just read the new Roman Missal...I really love the language changes, it's gorgeous. I can see now how many changes there were, and why you have to write a new setting for the sung/chanted portions of the mass.

I understand that there will be a new Spanish missal coming out, later. I'm wondering about the French. I think both languages are closer to the original Latin.
