View Full Version : Thoughts on Memorizing
I recognize that understanding the chord progressions which make up a piece of music is helpful in memorizing it. I can remember where to put my fingers because they are a part of a particular chord within that progression. However, I find that when I am working on a jazz piece, the chord progressions are comprised of chords containing numerous color tones or substitution chords to the point that the basic chord progression can get blurred. Then what happens is I begin to memorize the piece of music in a mechanical manner where I am just remembering where my fingers go, almost without regard for the notes or chords being formed. It works, and I can memorize the music but I am unsure if I am building anything which will help me learn the next piece easier. Any comments or suggestions about this ?

I really don't have an answer for this, but I can say what is helping me.
First, I have read many jazz books and they all claim that memorization is a key component to learning jazz. However, it comes with learning the basics from ground up and having a solid foundation in theory. It simply takes time. I have really been learning my chord voicings and scales in all 12 keys. I have also been really focusing on progressions and all the other stuff that adds color to the composition. I am finding that the more I understand theory and the more I can apply what I know to improvisation, the better I am able to memorize or understand the standards I attempt to play. One reason why I enjoy improvisation so much is that it gets me playing quickly whereas by learning standards I find myself memorizing and attached to sheet music too much. Another thing I find helpful is comping over lead sheets and creating my own melodies. When I later check out a piece of music, I find myself better equipped to tackle the music after I have had fun playing the lead sheet for awhile. Just my thoughts on how things seem to work for me a bit. Good Luck!

Hi Don,
I did a video-response to this in the the Q & A section in the member's area.
