Since I don't have much formal piano training this may seem like a strange question and I'm not really sure how to ask it, but here goes...

Is it standard practice to slide your bottom/body left or right on the piano bench while playing? When playing "Frank's Blues" and the corresponding Slow Blues Improv (basic/intermediate) the notes are low for both hands so it seems easier to move "down" or to the left a bit. The problem is that when going into "Eeek's Blues" the notes are higher and it feels awkward (especially the left hand) when reaching across your body to hit the higher chords. Just curious...

BTW, having three full lessons on the Slow Bb Blues is really a great concept. It give us a wide spectrum on the topic as well as a ton of licks, music and ideas to delve into. Great stuff.

Hi Mark:

Your question is a good one, and I actually had to think about it at the piano. Personally, I do not slide or move on the bench(I actually use a throne) However, i do shift the weight of my torso at extreme ranges(more so in the bass register), and am able to maintain good balance and hand/arm position.

Hope this helps
Bruce

Mark,

I have always been taught to sit in front of middle C. I too do not use a bench. On my keyboard, I use an armless office chair. At my grand, I have a square padded professional concert bench.

When playing both hands in the bass register, I sort of lean back and to the left to keep my forearms straight and room for my elbows. Just the opposite for the treble register. Again good question, I actually had to go sit at the piano to sit what I do in these situations. It is just automatic now.
