In the Funk Improv 3 lesson in the chapter discussing starting licks on different beats, I'm not sure that Willie demonstrated starting on the "and" correctly. The problem is the eighth vs. sixteenth note thing--the licks are written in eighth notes to help facilitate reading them but are more stylistically correct when played as sixteenths. If a lick is played in sixteenth notes then there are actually 16 entry points and not just 8 as mentioned in the vid. Willie demos starting on the "e" of beat one or two but never starting on the "and" or the "a" of a beat. (Each beat divided into four parts: 1 e + a, 2 e + a, etc.)
The reason I bring this up is that it may have been confusing to others too, but also because starting on the "and" or the "a" of a beat are pretty cool ways of playing the licks too. It gives you two more ways of masking the beat and bringing out different notes in the lick, which I think are the main points of the topic in the first place.
Sorry if I'm wrong about this, but look at the chapter again and see what you guys think.
