I find it very hard to divide rythm into 16th notes when playing medium to uptempo songs. I usually end up using the count for 8th notes and adjust by feel. I'm currently using a teaching book on blues and one song I would have never guess that it should be divided into 16th notes if it hadn't been for the book telling me to do so.

I would only suggest breaking down into 16th notes as fast as you can speak them.
The vocalization for 16th notes would be TiRi pronounced "Tier Ree" or...
use 1e+a 2e+a, pronounced "One eeee and ahh" etc.
Breaking down into 16th notes is usually for a slower tempo because it does little good to break it down that far unless you can vocalize it. Unless you are breaking it down for theoretical reasons only.
