I just recently started in the Blues and Boogie - Disk 1. When I got to the Groove with Lick 2, I found that the Lick seemed to be out of place with my natural sense of rhythm. My instinct wants to insert the first 4 notes of the lick as a PICKUP into the next measure with the next measure beginning with the quarter note. If I just sit down and "jam" with this lick, that is how it comes out naturally for me. I can do it the way it is written but it is a struggle for me. Any comments on this ?

Hey Don,

Sometimes when "intellectualizing" a section of music, the rhythm and groove suffers. So, I think that you are right on to just jam with it and use your ears.

Remember too, the licks main purpose is to get you improvising...which you are doing, so that is perfect. Sometimes you will only extract a piece of a lick and find that useful...that's ok.

Make sense?

Makes perfect sense. Thanks.
